How to offer water on a Shivling: the right method, mantra and what not to offer
Quick answer: To offer water on a Shivling, bathe and fill a copper, brass or silver pot with clean water. Sitting or bending near the Shivling, pour a thin, slow stream while chanting 'Om Namah Shivaya'. Then offer bel leaves, white flowers and akshat. The circle around a Shivling is only half done: devotees do not step over the jaladhari, the channel through which the water flows out.

- Sit or bend near the Shivling. In many traditions devotees face north while offering water.
- Chanting 'Om Namah Shivaya', pour a thin, slow stream of water on the Shivling; don't dump it all at once.
- Then offer bel leaves (smooth side towards the Shivling), dhatura or white flowers, akshat and sandalwood.
- Show a lamp or incense, pray with folded hands, and complete a half circle before returning.
Do
- Offer bel leaves in sets of three, clean and untorn.
- After water, some devotees also offer milk, curd, honey, ghee or sugarcane juice (panchamrit abhishek); finish with clean water again.
- If you have a small Shivling at home, offer a little water daily and pour the run-off into plants.
- In a crowded temple, give others their turn and stay calm.
What is not offered to Shiv (common tradition)
- Tulsi leaves are not offered on a Shivling.
- The ketaki (kewda) flower is not offered.
- In many traditions, turmeric and kumkum are not applied on the Shivling; sandalwood or bhasma is used.
- Water is not offered from a conch shell.
- Many people say milk should not be poured from a copper vessel; use brass or silver for milk.
- Don't walk a full circle around the Shivling or step over the jaladhari.
These are common customs and can differ by temple, region and family. In a temple, follow the priest's guidance. KathaMantra does not promise any specific result.
