Bhaja Govindam — Lyrics with Meaning
Bhaja Govindam, also called Moha Mudgara (the hammer that breaks delusion), is a famous hymn by Adi Shankaracharya. The story goes that he composed it in Kashi on seeing an old man memorising grammar rules. In simple words it shows how passing wealth, body and attachments are, and calls us to devotion and self-knowledge.

Shatrau mitre putre bandhau ma kuru yatnam vigraha-sandhau | Sarvasminn api pashyatmanam sarvatrotsrija bhedajnanam || 25 ||

Always see wealth as a source of trouble; truly, not a trace of lasting happiness comes from it. The rich fear even their own sons — this is how it is everywhere.
Verse 31
Pranayamam pratyaharam nityanitya-viveka-vicharam | Japya-sameta-samadhi-vidhanam kurv avadhanam mahad avadhanam || 30 ||

Frequently asked questions
Who wrote Bhaja Govindam?
Bhaja Govindam is by Adi Shankaracharya. Tradition says he spoke the first twelve verses (the Dvadasha Manjarika) and his disciples added the remaining verses.
Why is it called Moha Mudgara?
Mudgara means a hammer. The hymn breaks our attachment to wealth, body, family and desires and turns the mind towards God, so it is called the hammer of delusion.
Is Bhaja Govindam only for monks?
No. It is for everyone — young people, householders and the elderly alike. It gives practical lessons such as earning honestly, keeping good company, giving to the needy and reading the Gita and the Sahasranama.
