Meaning
Verse 1
Shiva uvacha Shrinu devi pravakshyami kunjika-stotram uttamam | yena mantra-prabhavena chandi-japah shubho bhavet ||1||
Shiv said: Listen, O Devi. I will tell you the excellent Kunjika Stotram, by whose power the recitation of the Chandi becomes fruitful.
Verse 2
Na kavacham nargala-stotram kilakam na rahasyakam | na suktam napi dhyanam cha na nyaso na cha varchanam ||2||
For this, neither the Kavach, the Argala Stotram, the Kilak nor the Rahasya is needed — nor hymn, meditation, nyas or ritual worship.
Verse 3
Kunjika-patha-matrena durga-patha-phalam labhet | ati guhyataram devi devanam api durlabham ||3||
It is said that reciting the Kunjika alone brings the fruit of reading the whole Durga Saptashati. O Devi, it is deeply secret and rare even for the gods.
Verse 4
Gopaniyam prayatnena svayonir iva parvati | maranam mohanam vashyam stambhanochchatanadikam | patha-matrena samsiddhyet kunjika-stotram uttamam ||4||
O Parvati, this should be guarded carefully as one's most private secret. The text says that even the tantric rites named in old texts are accomplished simply by reciting this excellent hymn.
Verse 5
Atha mantrah Om aim hrim klim chamundayai vichche | om glaum hum klim jum sah jvalaya jvalaya jvala jvala prajvala prajvala aim hrim klim chamundayai vichche jvala ham sam lam ksham phat svaha || iti mantrah
This is the Kunjika mantra. It is made of sacred seed syllables such as aim, hrim and klim, chanted to awaken the power of Goddess Chamunda; jvalaya means set alight, awaken.
Verse 6
Namaste rudra-rupinyai namaste madhu-mardini | namah kaitabha-harinyai namaste mahishardini ||1||
Salutations to you, who take the fierce form of Rudra. Salutations to the slayer of Madhu, the destroyer of Kaitabha and the vanquisher of Mahishasur.
Verse 7
Namaste shumbha-hantryai cha nishumbhasura-ghatini | jagratam hi mahadevi japam siddham kurushva me ||2||
Salutations to you who slew the demons Shumbh and Nishumbh. O great Goddess, awaken my chanting and make it fruitful.
Verse 8
Aimkari srishti-rupayai hrimkari pratipalika | klimkari kama-rupinyai bija-rupe namo'stu te ||3||
As aim you are creation, as hrim you are the protector, and as klim you are the power of desire. O Devi whose form is the seed syllables, I bow to you.
Verse 9
Chamunda chanda-ghati cha yaikari varadayini | vichche chabhayada nityam namaste mantra-rupini ||4||
You are Chamunda, slayer of Chanda; as the syllable yai you grant boons, and as vichche you always give fearlessness. O Devi who is the mantra itself, I bow to you.
Verse 10
Dham dhim dhum dhurjateh patni vam vim vum vagadhishvari | kram krim krum kalika devi sham shim shum me shubham kuru ||5||
With dham dhim dhum you are the wife of Shiv; with vam vim vum, the queen of speech; with kram krim krum, Goddess Kalika. With sham shim shum, bless me with good.
Verse 11
Hum hum humkara-rupinyai jam jam jam jambha-nadini | bhram bhrim bhrum bhairavi bhadre bhavanyai te namo namah ||6||
You whose form is the roar hum, who resound with jam jam jam; with bhram bhrim bhrum, O gracious Bhairavi, O Bhavani, I bow to you again and again.
Verse 12
Am kam cham tam tam pam yam sham vim dum aim vim ham ksham | dhijagram dhijagram trotaya trotaya diptam kuru kuru svaha ||7||
This part of the mantra is made of letters of the alphabet and seed syllables. It prays that the Devi break all bonds and make the practice awake and shining.
Verse 13
Pam pim pum parvati purna kham khim khum khechari tatha | sam sim sum saptashati devya mantra-siddhim kurushva me ||8||
With pam pim pum you are Parvati, the complete one; with kham khim khum, Khechari who moves through the sky. With sam sim sum, O Devi, make the mantras of the Saptashati fruitful for me.
Verse 14
Idam tu kunjika-stotram mantra-jagarti-hetave | abhakte naiva datavyam gopitam raksha parvati ||
This Kunjika Stotram is for awakening the mantras. O Parvati, it should not be given to one without devotion; keep it hidden and protect it.
Verse 15
Yastu kunjikaya devi hinam saptashatim pathet | na tasya jayate siddhir aranye rodanam yatha || iti shri-rudrayamale gauri-tantre shiva-parvati-samvade kunjika-stotram sampurnam |
O Devi, one who reads the Saptashati without the Kunjika does not gain its fruit, like weeping in an empty forest. Here ends the Kunjika Stotram, a dialogue of Shiv and Parvati from the Gauri Tantra of the Rudrayamala.
