The story so far

Hanuman has set Lanka ablaze and, relieved, found Sita safe. Now it is time to return.

Hanuman went to take leave of Sita and said: Mother, just as Ram gave me his ring as a token, please give me something too. Sita took the from her hair and gave it to him.

She also shared something only she and Ram knew. Once, in the forest, a crow had pecked her. Ram picked up a blade of grass and turned it into a weapon against it. The crow fled through the three worlds but found no shelter anywhere, until at last it sought refuge with Ram himself. Sita said: tell him this, so the Lord knows the message is true.

Hanuman bowed, climbed a mountain, roared, and flew back over the sea. On the shore Jamvant, Angad and the other vanaras were waiting. The moment they heard his roar, they knew he had succeeded. Joy spread all around.

On the way home, the vanaras burst into Sugriv's beloved , feasting on fruit and honey. Its keeper Dadhimukh complained to Sugriv. Sugriv laughed: if the vanaras are this happy, they must have found Sita!

In the Valmiki Ramayan, the first thing Hanuman said on reaching Ram was: I have seen Sita. He wanted the Lord not to worry for even a moment. Then he gave him the chudamani. Seeing it, Ram's eyes filled with tears, and he embraced Hanuman.

मातु मोहि दीजे कछु चीन्हा। जैसें रघुनायक मोहि दीन्हा॥ चूड़ामनि उतारि तब दयऊ। हरष समेत पवनसुत लयऊ॥

Hanuman said: Mother, give me a token, as Ram gave me one. Then Sita took off her chudamani and gave it, and the Son of the Wind joyfully received it.

A lesson for today

When you bring good news, say first what the other person is longing to hear. Hanuman's first words ended all of Ram's worry.
